To ensure your safety your Electrical Installation should be regularly tested and inspected to British Standards BS7671: 2008 - IEE Wiring Regulations 17th Edition, at least every 5 years (10 years for new homes, Commercial installations from 1 year depending on usage). Safety @ Work Each year about 1000 accidents at work involving electric shock or burns are reported to the Health & Safety Executive (HSE). Around 30 of these are fatal! Portable electrical appliances are a major cause of fires both in the home and at work. It's the legal obligation of employers to maintain all Electrical Installations in a safe condition. (Electricity At Work Act Regulation 4 and 16, Health and Safety Executive Guidance Note GS27, Institute of Electrical Engineers Wiring Regulations BS7671). Safety @ Home Every year some 28,000 fires are started through faulty electrical wiring and accessories causing death and injury. Renting property If you’re about to rent out (or buy) a property you will want to know if the electrics are safe. Spending a small amount now could save you a fortune later on. You will require a full Periodic Inspection & Test to check if the installation is ok as a visual check will not identify all the safety aspects of an installation. You will receive a full report detailing all the major faults & recommendations as to what to put right. LOOK OUT FOR WARNING SIGNS OF DANGEROUS WIRING; Hot plugs and sockets or scorch marks. Fuses that blow for no obvious reason and old style fuse boards with rewirable fuses, lights flickering, extension leads and adaptors used because of lack of socket outlets.
